<title>Taliban chief proposes formula to end crisis in Afghanistan</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1754</link>
<description>www.chinaview.cn 2008-12-20 15:22:08

KABUL, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Taliban elusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has forwarded a formula to end conflicts and bring about peace in his war-torn country, a local newspaper reported Saturday.

&quot;Mullah Omar delivered his plan through Saudi Arabia King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz,&quot; daily Outlook quoted Iranian television channel Press TV as saying.

Without going into the details of the formula, the newspaper added that the adamant Taliban chief, contrary to the past, in the plan stressed for timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan.

&quot;Peacekeeping troops from Muslim countries should replace the NATO and U.S. troops to ensure a smooth transition until the Afghans can reach a consensus government,&quot; Omar insisted in the formula, according to the newspaper.

Another demand made by Mullah Omar is about sharing power with the current Afghan regime as he also demanded the consolidation of the Taliban fighters into the Afghan army and amnesty for them.

Taliban spokespersons were not immediately available for comments.

Omar, who has not been seen in public since being ousting from power by U.S.-led troops in late 2001, had previously conditioned any talks with President Hamid karzai's government with the pullout of more than 70,000-strong international forces from Afghanistan.

With mediation of Saudi Arabian Kingdom, a meeting was held between Taliban and pro-government figures including some Afghan parliamentarians in Riyadh some three months ago.

President Karzai, besides appreciating the talks, called on Saudi Arabian leader to play a role in strengthening security in Afghanistan.

Nevertheless, the fugitive Taliban chief, whose name is among the wanted men by the United States, in the formula warned to intensify attacks on foreign troops if the White House sends additional troops to Afghanistan.

<title>Al-Qaa’idah is moving to Africa</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1753</link>
<description>18-12-2008

The following is a translation of an article from Sada’ al-Jihad’s magazine (7th issue; June 2006) which gives insight into the interest of the Mujahideen in the African region. Keep in mind, this was written 2 years ago, so some of the things have changed in favor of the Mujahideen in general, and al-Qaa’idah in particular. For instance, Jamaat al-Islamiyya joined ranks with al-Qaa’idah as did al-Jamaa’atul-salafiyyatu lil-da’wati wal-qitaal as well as Al-Jama’a al-Islamiyyah al-Muqatilah bi-Libya. We have seen a massive increase in attacks by Tandheem al-Qaa’idah in the Islamic Maghreb ever since its joining with the global Jihad; we have also witnessed how they are spreading their influence in other local countries and are sending Mujahideen to ‘Iraq, some of them going to Afghanistan, some of them not ever returning; we have seen the same in Tunisia, Libya, and Morocco. But by far, the hottest conflict in Africa is the one in Somalia and in about a week or so, the war will end in favor of the Mujahideen there, In Sha’ Allah. Sudan and Nigeria appears quiet but Nigeria has its “Taliban Nigeria” organization (influenced by Taliban as you can see) in the North which was formed in 2003, where it rules 12 states by Shari’ah. As for Egypt, it will have to eventually play a major role in the Jihadi revitalization - and al-Qaa’idah has already established a base there - because of three major factors:

America has installed one of the world’s largest CIA Headquarters in Egypt

Palestine is next door

Extreme oppression in the form of violence, torture, and economic repression against the population and particularly against the religious Muslims only leads to a popular anti-Government sentiment; if 2 million Egyptians joined Ikhwan al-Muslimoon in the early days, then that goes to tell you how the Egyptian people in general are looking for a revolution

<title>Three undersea cables cut: traffic disturbed between Europe and Asia</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1752</link>
<description>3 cables cut this morning
France Telecom Marine cable ship about to depart

PARIS — France Telecom observed today that 3 major underwater cables were cut: “Sea Me We 4” at 7:28am, “Sea Me We3” at 7:33am and FLAG at 8:06am. The causes of the cut, which is located in the Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia, on sections linking Sicily to Egypt, remain unclear.

Most of the B to B traffic between Europe and Asia is rerouted through the USA. Traffic from Europe to Algeria and Tunisia is not affected, but traffic from Europe to the Near East and Asia is interrupted to a greater or lesser extent (see country list below).

Part of the internet traffic towards Réunion is affected as well as 50% towards Jordan. A first appraisal at 7:44 am UTC gave an estimate of the following impact on the voice traffic (in percentage of out of service capacity):

Saudi Arabia: 55% out of service
Djibouti: 71% out of service
Egypt: 52% out of service
United Arab Emirates: 68% out of service
India: 82% out of service
Lebanon: 16% out of service
Malaysia: 42% out of service
Maldives: 100% out of service
Pakistan: 51% out of service
Qatar: 73% out of service
Syria: 36% out of service
Taiwan: 39% out of service
Yemen: 38% out of service
Zambia: 62% out of service

<title>Dozens of suspected al Qaeda members detained in Turkey</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1751</link>
<description>
Turkish police on Wednesday detained 30 people suspected of belonging to the al Qaeda network, the Anatolian Agency reported.

Anti-terrorist police detained 15 suspects in Istanbul and 15 more in two other regions of the country, the report said without giving further details.

They also seized documents and other material during the operation, the report added.

The operations are the latest in a string of detentions in Turkey.

In August, eleven alleged members of al Qaeda were detained in southeastern Turkey, accused of establishing a group named the Muslim Revenge Brigade in order to carry out attacks. They are due to be tried later this month.

A Turkish prosecutor charged Wednesday two suspected al Qaeda members over an attack on the U.S. consulate in Istanbul in July, in which three attackers and three police officers were killed.

Al Qaeda has carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in the past. In 2003, al Qaeda militants killed more than 60 people in a series of bombings in Istanbul.

<title>Chinese Cyber-Warfare – Events, Motivations, and Actors</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1750</link>
<description>by Kevin Larkin
Thursday, December 18, 2008
Vol. I, Issue 7

Over the past three years, cyber threats have become more diverse and attacks have become more frequent and more successful, highlighting the failure of government agencies and private institutions to protect themselves.

In spring 2005 the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) experienced network security breaches, during which sensitive data about satellites, rocket engines, launch systems as well as the aging Space Shuttle was acquired and sent to a computer system in Taiwan.

In early November 2008, the Financial Times reported that hackers had successfully penetrated the White House computer network on several occasions and obtained government e-Mails and other information. U.S. cyber security experts blamed hackers “sponsored by the Chinese government” for the attacks but could not say so with certainty.

There is, however, an increasing trend of Chinese computer attacks against government, military, supranational and civilian institutions worldwide. This risk assessment looks at key events, Chinese information warfare (IW) strategy and actors, both military and civilian.

Recent Events

This summer, the Obama and McCain campaign computer networks were subject to very sophisticated and targeted attacks, highly suspected to be originating from China. It is alleged that this was done to gain insight into the development of policy positions of the respective political camps. Since this information is primarily of value to national governments wishing to understand the incoming administration, there is a strong case that these attacks were conducted on behalf of a national actor.

<title>Pak Taliban releases video of five beheaded 'spies'</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1749</link>
<description>Thursday, 18 December , 2008, 08:15
Last Updated: Thursday, 18 December , 2008, 08:37

Islamabad: Pakistan's Taliban insurgents have released a video of five beheaded men, including soldiers, they accused of spying on Al Qaeda, IRNA reported on Wednesday.

In &quot;confessional statements&quot; before their beheading the victims said that they had &quot;provided secret information&quot; to Pakistani and US officials for carrying out attacks against the group, according to the video sent to journalists in Peshawar.

India’s Al Qaeda

Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas, however, denied the claim saying that the government has not provided any intelligence to the Americans, the BBC Urdu, one of the recipients of the video tape, reported on its website.

Al Qaeda leader Abu Laith al-Libi along with 11 others was killed in a US missile attack in a house in Pakistan's tribal region on January 29. He was a key figure of the group in Afghanistan.

<title>Mozilla Fixes Security Bugs In Firefox Browser</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1748</link>
<description>By Stefanie Hoffman, ChannelWeb
7:44 PM EST Wed. Dec. 17, 2008

Mozilla patched numerous security flaws in its Firefox Web browser Tuesday, six of which were considered &quot;critical,&quot; which pave the way for hackers to hijack users' sessions while they surf the Web.

The latest version of Firefox, 3.0.5, repaired a multitude of glitches that could enable remote hackers to execute malicious code that would shut down a vulnerable system or infiltrate a victim's computer and steal information.

One of the most serious vulnerabilities repaired by the update enabled attackers to inject malicious URLs into the session restore feature of the browser. The flaw could be used to violate the same origin policy and launch a cross-site scripting attack, which is often used by hackers to steal financial, identifying and other sensitive information while victims are running SessionStore.

<title>Iran vows harsh response for Sunni rebel group</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1747</link>
<description>Iran will give a &quot;tooth-breaking&quot; response to a Sunni rebel group which has killed 16 policemen it abducted in June, a senior official said in comments broadcast on Saturday. The state-run IRNA news agency reported on Thursday that all the seized police had been killed, after they were taken hostage some six months ago from a checkpoint in the town of Saravan in Sistan-Baluchestan province bordering Pakistan.

Iran said the Jundollah group, which was demanding the release of 200 of its members, has links with al Qaeda. &quot; We will give a firm and tooth-breaking response to armed rebels in border areas,&quot; Iranian Prosecutor-General Qorban-Ali Dori-Najafabadi was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Jundollah, which reportedly transferred the hostages to Pakistan after their abduction, previously said it had killed four of them.

Iran says the group's head Abdolmalek Rigi is a leader of the al Qaeda network in Iran.

<title>Hizbullah chief initiates open-ended protest until Gaza Strip siege is over</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1746</link>
<description>Posted: 15-12-2008 , 20:07 GMT

Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Monday called for an open-ended protest until the Gaza Strip siege is lifted. &quot; Our actions that will start on Friday will not end on that day, but until the Gaza siege is lifted,&quot; Nasrallah said in a televised speech broadcast on Al-Manar TV.

He called for a demonstration to be held next Friday in Beirut's southern suburbs. &quot; The Gaza siege is aimed at defeating the will of the Palestinian people so that the Zionists can impose their conditions,&quot; Nasrallah said. &quot; It's our duty today to move and continue work to end the siege,&quot; Nasrallah stressed.

He slammed Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni for saying Israeli-Arabs who had national aspirations should move to a Palestinian state when it is established. &quot; What Livni said was not a slip of the tongue,&quot; Nasrallah said.

Nasrallah said there are two scenes in Gaza today -- hunger, cold and shelling facing steadfastness. He called on Egypt to open Rafah border crossing permanently.

Addressing Arab and world countries, Nasrallah said: &quot;From a humanitarian position I tell them that there are one and half million people in Gaza who face sickness and death.&quot;

Turning to the Arabs, he asked: &quot;where is the Arabian courage today?'

<title>Rockets fired into Israel following killing of Palestinian in West Bank</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1745</link>
<description>Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip fired rockets at southern Israel on Tuesday. Three rockets hit open ground in southern Israel without causing any casualties or damage, an army spokeswoman said.

The armed wing of the radical Islamic Jihad movement said it had fired four rockets in response to the overnight killing of one of its members in the West Bank. Early Tuesday, the Israeli troops shot dead the 20-year-old Jihad Nawahda, a member of Saraya al-Quds, in the West Bank village of Yamun, near Jenin.

Israeli troops dressed in civilian clothes, killed Nawahda as he was coming out of an internet cafe. Other Israeli forces then raided the village and interrogated several Palestinians at the internet cafe before leaving the village.

<title>Mystery grows over general's slaying in Pakistan</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1743</link>
<description>Reuters

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani newspapers gave prominent coverage on Monday to a British media report that a retired general gunned down in Islamabad last month planned to blow the whistle on fellow generals' dealings with the Taliban.

Jang, Pakistan's biggest selling Urdu-language newspaper, ran a story on its front page headlined: &quot;Gen. Alavi was against pacts with Taliban, Musharraf had sacked him.&quot;

The reports in Jang and other Pakistani dailies were based on a story published in the Sunday Times, and written by Carey Schofield. (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article5337881.ece) Major-General Amir Faisal Alavi, a brother-in-law of Nobel prize-winning British novelist V.S. Naipaul, was shot dead along with his driver on the outskirts of the capital on November 19.

Suspicion initially fell on Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban, but an investigation by police and intelligence agencies has yet to come up with hard evidence.

&quot; The investigation is going on but so far there has been no progress. We could not identify the murderers or the motive,&quot; said Sajid Kiyani, superintendent of police in Islamabad.

Schofield says Alavi, who had commanded the elite Special Services Group, gave her a copy of a letter he had had sent to army chief General Ashfaq Kayani in which he named two generals whose conspiracy resulted in his premature retirement more than two years ago.

<title>Tunisia claims exile met Osama bin Laden and recruited trainees for terror camps</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1742</link>
<description>Richard Kerbaj in Tunis and Dominic Kennedy in London

Sitting in his office near the Palais de Justice in Kasbah, the heart of Tunis, the Tunisian Justice Minister Bechir Tekkari was unable to hide his frustration with Britain for refusing to extradite Mohamed Ali Harrath.

During a 45-minute interview, Mr Tekkari made serious but unspecific allegations against Mr Harrath. The claims are purported to be based on the confessions of Mr Harrath’s co-accused during criminal trials in Tunisia. All are rejected by Mr Harrath, and Tunisia has produced nothing to corroborate its accusations.

Mr Tekkari claimed that former members of the FIT (the Tunisian Islamic Front) admitted during court hearings that Mr Harrath met and successfully sought assistance from Osama bin Laden, that Mr Harrath sent volunteers to camps in Pakistan “where they received training on how to commit terrorist acts and assassinations” and that he continued “sending new recruits to terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan” after travelling to England.

Mr Harrath denies having met bin Laden and says that the terror training allegations were “completely outrageous and false”.

Mr Tekkari accused Mr Harrath of having prepared “plans and programmes for terrorist acts projected by the (FIT)” from London, but provided no details of the plots.

He claimed that, since basing himself in Britain, Mr Harrath had been “recruiting new members to the terrorist group he founded; collecting funds to finance the activities of this organisation; [and] co-ordinating the action of the [FIT] with the fundamentalist organisation Ennahda, of which it represents the military wing”.

<title>Khyber’s Shinwaris, Afridis feel ‘humiliated’ by LI</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1740</link>
<description>* LI vigilantes abuse, ‘fine’ men for musical ring tones, music in cars * Tribesmen avoid travelling between Landikotal and Peshawar

By Iqbal Khattak

PESHAWAR: Khyber Agency's Shinwari and Afridi tribesmen say they are abused and humiliated by Lashkar-e-Islam (LI), a private militia, which has taken it upon itself to 'preserve tribal traditions and Islamic values’.

“I feel disgraced and humiliated at the way the LI men treat us at checkposts,” a tribal elder who migrated to Peshawar from Khyber following the emergence of the private militia and the Taliban in the area told Daily Times.

Fines: Mobile phones with musical ring tones or images will be confiscated, a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on owners of cars playing music and anyone not wearing the local cap will have to pay a Rs 100 fine to the LI vigilantes on the main Torkham highway, tribal sources said.

“The Shinwaris and Afridis have never been disgraced and humiliated in this manner. Sometimes I think we, the proud people of Khyber, are so weak that we cannot face this bunch of people.”

What pains the Shinwaris and Afridis most is the vigilantes swearing at them in women’s presence.

<title>Al-Shabab of Somalia – A Danger To All</title>
<link>http://worldanalysis.net/postnuke/html/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1739</link>
<description>Abdulazez Al-Motairi
December 12, 2008

Possible return of Islamists like Al-Shabab to power in lawless Somalia can be danger to all Somalis, neighboring states and international community. Any withdrawal of current African Union (AU) and Ethiopian Forces will leave vacuum, and enable Al-Shabab to grip the control over the country.

President-elect Barrack Obama should support the current international efforts to stabilize Somalia, including Djibouti conferences between the Prime Minister of Transitional Government of Somalia (TGS) Nur Adde and Alliance for Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) led by ousted leader Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. Somalia will loop into violence and catastrophe, if foreign forces withdraw at the current stage.

Somali Islamists like Al-Shabab are part of Al-Qaeda terrorist organizations, and even consider Osama Bin Laden as their spiritual leader. Al-Shabab vow to fight against semi-democratic areas in former Somalia including &quot;Puntland&quot; and neighboring Somaliland with elected president and parliament. Recently, Al-Shabab carried out suicide bombings in Hargiesa, Capital of Somaliland, and Bosasso of &quot;Puntland&quot;. The danger of Al-Shabab will spread across Ethiopia, Kenya and peaceful parts of former Somalia in addition to independent Somaliland.

Al-Shabab, Taliban styled terrorist organization, is byproduct of ousted Islamic Courts Union. Majority of Al-Shabab leaders were trained in Afghanistan with other Al-Qaeda factions. Al-Shabab is Al-Qaeda´s wing in Africa, and mastermind of US Embassies bombing in 1998 in Nairobi and Darussalam. Al-Shabab recruits the young Somali teenagers across Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya and as far as USA.

FBI identified Shirwa Ahmed, resident of Minnesota USA, as the main suspect and architect of Hargiesa suicide bombing on 29/10/2008 that killed 40 and injured more than hundred people. Somali youth from USA and UK are joining Al-Shabab in southern Somalia.

Regional governments and semi-autonomous authorities should coordinate in fighting against terrorists before they follow them to home. Ethiopia, Kenya, Somaliland and semi-autonomous region of Somalia &quot;Puntland&quot; should form united force against terrorists. The governments in the region should carry out massive media campaign to avoid brain-washing by the terrorists, who usually use religion to achieve political and personal goals.

It will be greatest danger of all for the people of Ethiopia, Somaliland, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia would be if Somalia even again came under the rule of Islamists like Al-Shabab or other terror organizations linked to Al-Qaeda. US Pentagon expressed concern over growing terrorist militancy in Somalia.
